Green light is an unlimited edition of a socially conscious artwork designed by Olafur Eliasson for Thyssen–Bornemisza Art Contemporary in Vienna. Made in the context of an artistic workshop harnessing the collective effort of young refugees and residents of Vienna, the Green light lamps signalize a metaphoric green light of inclusion and openness at this critical moment of social transformation and ongoing dynamics of displacement and migration.
A response to the ongoing dynamics of displacement and migration, Green light is an ongoing artistic workshop and a multifaceted learning platform in which young refugees and residents produce these lamps in a collective effort.
The crystalline Green light are polyhedral units fitted with small, green-tinted light fixtures. Made predominantly from recycled and sustainable materials and designed to be stackable, the modules can function either as single objects or be assembled into a variety of architectural configurations. In the context of its exhibitions, the lamps form a steadily expanding environment in the exhibition space that carries the narratives of its making.
