The painting is not the medium of pictorial contents, but an object, highlighting the material used. Carsten Nicolai spans translucent polyester, in part painted with technical patterns, on aluminium frames. The viewer’s gaze is interrupted by shades and loopholes, surfaces and patterns that emerge quite clearly and others that blur indistinctly. The material of the picture becomes three-dimensional in the process of seeing.
