Since its inception in 2012, the Dharamshala International Film Festival (DIFF), directed by Ritu Sarin & Tenzing Sonam of White Crane Film, has remained faithful to its founding mission to promote contemporary art, cinema, and independent media practice in the Himalayan regions of India and to create an engaged cultural platform that encourages intercultural exchange by bringing local and international high-profile films and filmmakers to Dharamshala. Dharamshala is a small town in the foothills of the North Indian Himalaya, home of the Tibetan exile community and their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, remote of the conventional infrastructure of international film festivals.

In line with DIFF’s concern to promote and encourage local filmmaking talent, this 5th edition will be accompanied by an eclectic side-program featuring special screenings, master-classes, and workshops.

Special local interest this year comes in the form of the DIFF's Spotlight on Kangra Valley programme, which features Dharamshala director Sanjeev Kumar’s feature Man de Phere (Gaddi language); Prabhijit Dhamijia’s short Asmad and Steffi Giaracuni’s documentary about a legendary Himachal architect, Didi Contractor: Marrying the Earth to the Building.

Ritu and Tenzing say: “As we celebrate our fifth edition, we hope to build on the hallmarks that have made DIFF such a special event. After reviewing hundreds of films over many months, we have put together a slate of films that embody the spirit of independent cinema, that demonstrate strong directorial vision and a willingness to take risks, and that tell stories that are relevant in today’s world.”

TBA21 will contribute to the DIFF programming with the following artistic installations from the foundation’s collection:

Collapse, 2009
The Incidental Insurgents, Part 1: The Part about the Bandits, Chapter 2, 2012
The Incidental Insurgents, Part 2: Unforgiving Years, 2014
by Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme
