In Jim Lambie's work, minimalism becomes a loaded subject, quite literally, laden with the kind of excess preferred by Elton John's stylist. His sculpture Soft Cell protrudes from the wall like a single dolled-up unit of Donald Judd's blue "Untitled (Stack)". Encrusted with glitter, cassette tape guts dangling like tinsel, a second-hand turntable is elevated to the holy order of objecthood. Fusing style icon with community disco kitsch, Soft Cell portrays a tainted love (pun intended), broaching greatness as a DIY endeavour, casting art history to the car-boot stockpile of beloved odds and ends. – Excerpted from Patricia Ellis, "Glasgow Pomo", in T-B A21 Collection Book
